Radiology Reviews:
Learn more about our full-service Independent Medical Examination Services nationwide in all specialties.
Radiology is the medical specialty concerned with the diagnostic and therapeutic applications of radiant energy. Radiologists diagnose and treat diseases with radiologic methodologies. Radiologic reviews may be requested in conjuction with Orthopedic Surgery IMEs, or Neurologic independent medical exams.
Radiologists usually specialize in one of the following three fields: Radiation Oncology, where radiant energy is used to study and manage disease, especially malignant cancers; Radiological Physics, which deals with roentgen rays, sealed-source gamma rays, ultrasonic and radio-frequency radiation, and related methodologies; and most importantly for the independent medical examination field, Diagnostic Radiology. Radiologists who use radiant energy for diagnostic purposes are involved with X-rays, radionuclides, ultrasound, and electromagnetic radiation. Radiology reviews often include forwarding of films previously taken for an independent opinion and report.
Radiology Training:
Before performing independent medical evaluations, a radiologist should meet the following requirements: Credentialing should reveal training of 4 years. After this, Board Certification and a vigorous ongoing private practice are necessary in a credible radiological physician. As with any specialty considered for an independent review, a radiologist should be licensed and in good standing as well.
Radiology subspecialty certifications:
Certification in one of the following subspecialties requires additional training and examination.
- Clinical Neuroradiology: A neuroradiologist diagnoses and treats diseases using imaging procedures as they relate to the brain, spine, spinal cord, head, neck, and organs of special sense in adults and children.
- Nuclear Radiology: A radiologist who deals with the analysis and imaging of radionucides and radiolabled substances.
- Pediatric Radiology: A radiologist proficient in diagnostic imaging as it pertains to diagnosis and treatment of disease in infants, children, and adolescents.
- Vascular & Interventional Radiology: A radiologist who diagnoses and treats disease by various radiologic imaging modalities, including fluoroscopy, digital radiography, computed tomography, sonography, and MRI or magnetic resonance imaging.
