Neurology:
Learn more about our full-service Independent Medical Examination Services nationwide in all specialties.
Neurology is the medical specialty concerned with the evaluation and treatment of disorders of the nervous system, including those affecting the brain, spinal cord, peripheral nerves, muscles, and autonomic nervous system, as well as the blood vessels that relate to these structures. Neurologic independent medical examinations are typically requested in conjuction with Orthopedic Surgery IMEs.
A neurologist may be involved with a wide range of problems including headache, epilepsy, numbness, Parkinson's disease, and loss of movement or memory. Most neurologic independent medical examinations are necessitated by trauma or injury and involve some numbness or loss of sensation. A neurologic IME may also assess occupational conditions such as carpal tunnel syndrome. A child neurologist has experience in the diagnosis and treatment of neurologic disorders of infants, children, and adolescents, and may be requested, for example, when a car accident involves a child as well as adults.
Neurologic Training:
Before performing independent medical evaluations, a neurologist should meet the following requirements: Credentialing should reveal training of 4 years. After this, Board Certification and a vigorous ongoing private practice are necessary in a credible IME physician. As with any specialty considered for an independent medical exam, a neurologist or child neurologist should be licensed and in good standing as well.
Neurology subspecialty certifications:
Certification in one of the following subspecialties requires additional training and examination.
- Clinical Neurophysiology: Concerning the evaluation of the central, peripheral, and autonomic nervous systems with a combination of clinical evaluation and electrophysiologic testing such as EMGs (electromyography), NCSs (nerve conduction studies), and EEGs (electroencephalograms). Note that for independent medical exam purposes testing such as this needs to be pre-approved.
- Neurodevelopmental Disabilities: A neurologist (or pediatrician) who deals with the diagnosis and treatment of chronic conditions of the mature or developing nervous system.
- Pain Management: A neurologist, or child neurologist who provides care for those with acute, chronic, or cancer pain.
Please note: There is one ABMS approved member board for both Neurologists and Psychiatrists; however, usually a physician is a member of this board as either a Neurologist or a Phychiatrist. While there is some overlap in these specialties, being a member of this board does not automatically qualify one of these specialties to comment on areas of the other. A true Neuropsychiatrist must be double board certified as a member of this board as both a Neurologist, and a Psychiatrist to practice what most consider true Neuropsychiatry.
