Orthopedic Surgery, also spelled "Orthopaedic", is the medical specialty concerned with the evaluation, preservation, and restoration of the form and function of the spine and upper and lower extremities. Specifically, the bones, joints, muscles, ligaments and tendons of the body. Orthopedic intervention may take the form of medical, surgical, and physical modalities. Orthopedic surgery independent medical examinations are sometimes requested in conjuction with Neurological IMEs.
An Orthopedic Surgeon may be involved in a wide range of musculoskeletal problems but most independent medical examinations are necessitated by trauma or injury to the back or spine, hands, feet, knees, hips, shoulders, or elbows. Othopedic surgery IMEs also assess preexisting or degenerative changes of the cervical, thoracic, or lumbar spine. Diagnostic tools may include X-rays or MRIs.
Orthopedic Surgery Training:
Before performing independent medical evaluations, an orthopedic surgeon should meet the following requirements: Credentialing should reveal training of 5 years, including general surgery training, plus two years in clinical practice. After this, Board Certification and a vigorous ongoing private practice are necessary. As with any specialty considered for an independent medical exam, an orthopedic surgeon should be licensed and in good standing as well.
Orthopedic Surgery subspecialty certifications:
Certification in one of the following subspecialties requires additional training and examination.
- Orthopedic Hand Surgery: An orthopedist trained in the investigation, preservation and restoration by medical, surgical, and rehabilitative means of all structures of the upper extremity directly affecting the form and function of the hand and wrist.
