Neuropsychiatry:
Learn more about our full-service Independent Medical Examination Services nationwide in all specialties.
Neuropsychiatry is the overlapping area between neurology and psychiatry concerned with the study, diagnosis and treatment of disorders resulting from organic or physical defects in the brain; ie. psychiatric problems or acquired behavioral disorders where measurable brain deficits exist. In most cases involving independent medical examinations these problems are attributable to neurologic disease or trauma. Neuropsychiatry is not one of the ABMS member boards; however, neuropsychiatric independent medical exams may be requested in lieu of psychiatric or neurologic IMEs.
In a broader sense, neuropsychiatry involves the assessment and treatment of patients with psychiatric symptomology associated with definite brain dysfunction or lesions. This may include conditions such as: cerebral vascular disease, seizure disorders, neurodegenerative diseases (Alzheimer’s Disease, Parkinson’s Disease, etc.), brain tumors, infectious and inflammatory diseases of the central nervous system (CNS), alcohol and other substance-induced organic mental disorders and developmental disorders involving the brain. Treatment modalities include medication, and brain mapping techniques, including computerized or quantified EEGs, or audio or visual evoked potentials.
Most neuropsychiatry, or neuro-psych, independent medical examinations are necessitated by trauma or injury to the central nervous system, or often the brain, which may be reffered to as TBI, or traumatic brain injury.
A neuropsychiatrist may be differentiated from a neuropsychologist in that the latter may not prescribe medication, and utilizes different evaluation techniques, often restricted to the areas of the brain that support conscious activity, ie. the cerebral cortex. Neuropsychological testing is often used in assessing educational potential and educational deficits. A neuropsychological independent medical examination may be appropriate if this type of testing and treatment is being rendered.
Neuropsychiatric Training:
Before performing independent medical evaluations, a neuropsychiatrist should meet the following requirements: Credentialing should reveal basic medical training of 4 years. Beyond this, residency training of two years each in both neurology and psychiatry is preferable. Board Certification as both a neurologist and a psychiatrist in the American Board of Psychiatry and neurology is necessary. As with any specialty considered for an independent medical examination, a neuropsychiatrist should be licensed and in good standing, with a vigorous private practice.
NEUROPSYCHIATRISTS must be members of the following board as both* Neurologists and Psychiatrists:
American Board of Psychiatry & Neurology
500 Lake Cook Rd., Ste. 335
Deerfield, IL 60015
(847) 945-7900
* This may be confirmed by two different certificate numbers from the Board.
