Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, also called physiatry, or rehabilitation medicine, is the medical specialty concerned with physical disabilities and restoration of function. Specifically, the evaluation and treatment of disorders of the musculoskeletal, neurologic, cardiovascular or other body systems. The focus being on maximal restoration of physical, psychological, social and vocational function and on alleviation of pain. Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation independent medical examinations are sometimes requested in conjuction with vocational rehabilitation reviews.
Practicioners, commonly referred to as physiatrists or PM&R doctors, may be involved with a wide range of problems including cervical and lumbar pain, sports injuries, or neurological trauma. Most physical medicine and rehabilitation independent medical examinations are necessitated by musculoskeletal trauma or injury and involve some loss of function. An example would be a motor vehicle accident resulting in spinal cord injury. A physiatry IME may also assess occupational conditions such as carpal tunnel syndrome.
Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Training:
Before performing independent medical evaluations, a physiatrist should meet the following requirements: Credentialing should reveal training of 4 years plus 1 year clinical practice. After this, Board Certification and a vigorous ongoing private practice are necessary in a credible IME physician. As with any specialty considered for an independent medical exam, a physiatrist should be licensed and in good standing as well.
Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation subspecialty certifications:
Certification in one of the following subspecialties requires additional training and examination.
- Pediatric Rehabilitative Medicine: A physiatrist who deals with the diagnosis and treatment of congenital or childhood onset physical impairments with a view toward the life course of disability and continuous care.
- Pain Management: A physiatrist who provides care for those with acute, chronic, or cancer pain.
- Spinal Cord Injury Medicine: Concerning the evaluation of traumatic and non-traumatic spinal cord disfunction.
