Cardiology:
Learn more about our full-service Independent Medical Examination Services nationwide in all specialties.
Cardiology is a subspecialty of Internal Medicine concerned with the prevention, investigation and treatment of, and research into, diseases involving the cardiovascular system. This includes the heart, lungs, and associated blood vessels. Cardiologists manage complex conditions such as heart attacks and abnormal rhythms.
In general, cardiology involves training in advanced cardiac life support (ACLS), including cardioversion; electrocardiography, including ambulatory monitoring and exercise testing; echocardiography; arterial catheter insertion; and right-heart catheterization, including insertion and management of temporary pacemakers. For independent medical evaluations, Cardiology is often chosen as a specialty where some condition such as a myocardial infarction results from an injury.
Cardiology Training:
Before performing independent medical evaluations, a cardiologist should meet the following requirements: Credentialing should reveal basic training of 3 years with three additional years of accredited cardiac training, of which a minimum of 24 months is clinical training, in the diagnosis and management of a broad spectrum of cardiovascular diseases. (note: two years of accredited cardiology training completed before July 1990 may be acceptable through the year 2000). After this, Board Certification and a vigorous ongoing private cardiac / internal medicine practice are necessary. As with any specialty considered for an independent medical exam, a cardiologist should be licensed and in good standing as well.
Cardiac certificates of added qualifications:
Certification in one of the following subspecialties requires additional training and examination.
- Clinical Cardiac Electrophysiology:
A field of special interest within the subspecialty of cardiology concerning the use of diagnostic procedures to evaluate heart rhythms and determine courses of treatment.
