Pulmonology:
Learn more about our full-service Independent Medical Examination Services nationwide in all specialties.
Pulmonology is a subspecialty of Internal Medicine concerned with the prevention, investigation and treatment of, and research into, diseases involving the pulmonary system. This includes the lungs and airways. Pulmonologists manage conditions such as pneumonia, cancer, pleurisy, asthma, bronchitis, sleep disorders, emphysema, and other complex disorders of the pulmonary system. For independent medical examination purposes, pulmonary IMEs are often requested for occupational diseases such as asbestosis.
In general, pulmonology involves training in Oral/nasal intubation; fiber optic bronchoscopy and accompanying procedures; ventilator management; thoracentesis and percutaneous pleural biopsy; arterial puncture; placement of arterial and pulmonary artery balloon flotation catheters; calibration and operation of hemodynamic recording systems; supervision of the technical aspects of pulmonary function testing; progressive exercise testing; and insertion and management of chest tubes.
Pulmonology Training:
Before performing independent medical evaluations, a pulmonologist should meet the following requirements: Credentialing should reveal basic training of 3 years with two years of accredited training, of which a minimum of 12 months is clinical training, in the diagnosis and management of a broad spectrum of medical diseases. After this, Board Certification and a vigorous ongoing private pulmonary / internal medicine practice are necessary. As with any specialty considered for an independent medical exam, a pulmonologist should be licensed and in good standing as well.
