Psychiatry:
Learn more about our full-service Independent Medical Examination Services nationwide in all specialties.
Psychiatry is the medical specialty concerned with the prevention, evaluation, and treatment of mental, addictive, and emotional disorders. Psychiatric independent medical examinations are typically requested where there is some emotional or psychological trauma.
A psychiatrist may be involved with a wide range of problems including schizophrenia and other psychotic disorders, mood disorders, anxiety disorders, substance-related disorders, sexual and gender identity disorders, and adjustment disorders. Most psychiatric independent medical examinations are necessitated by trauma or injury that leads to the emergence of conditions such as depression, or PTSD (post traumatic stress disorder). A psychiatric IME may also assess long standing ongoing conditions brought on by inability to work and other pressures.
Psychiatric Training:
Before performing independent medical evaluations, a psychiatrist should meet the following requirements: Credentialing should reveal training of 4 years. After this, Board Certification and a vigorous ongoing private psychiatric practice are necessary in a credible IME physician. As with any specialty considered for an independent medical exam, a psychiatrist should be licensed and in good standing as well.
Psychiatry subspecialty certifications:
Certification in one of the following subspecialties requires additional training and examination.
- Addiction Psychiatry: A psychiatrist who deals with the diagnosis and treatment of substance-related disorders, including alchoholism and drug abuse.
- Child and Adolescent Psychiatry: A psychiatrist specializing in the care of children and adolescents.
- Clinical Neurophysiology: Concerning the evaluation of the central, peripheral, and autonomic nervous systems with a combination of clinical evaluation and electrophysiologic testing such as EMGs (electromyography), NCSs (nerve conduction studies), and EEGs (electroencephalograms). Note that for independent medical exam purposes testing such as this needs to be pre-approved.
- Forensic Psychiatry: A psychiatrist who deals with the legal system, providing specialized evaluation of prisoners, detained persons, and those in forensic psychiatry hospitals.
- Geriatric Psychiatry: A psychiatrist who provides care for the elderly.
- Pain Management: A psychiatrist who provides care for those with acute, chronic, or cancer pain.
Please note: There is one ABMS approved member board for both Neurologists and Psychiatrists; however, usually a physician is a member of this board as either a Neurologist or a Phychiatrist. While there is some overlap in these specialties, being a member of this board does not automatically qualify one of these specialties to comment on areas of the other. A true Neuropsychiatrist must be double board certified as a member of this board as both a Neurologist, and a Psychiatrist to practice what most consider true Neuropsychiatry.
