General Surgery, (incl. Vascular and Hernia):
Learn more about our full-service Independent Medical Examination Services nationwide in all specialties.
General Surgery is the medical specialty concerned with the evaluation and preoperative, operative, and postoperative care of surgical patients. A surgeon manages a wide range of conditions affecting many areas of the body. General surgery independent medical examinations are typically requested in cases where there is a hernia reapir in an occupational setting, or where there is a trauma in personal injury cases.
A general surgeon may be involved with a wide range of surgical conditions concerning such areas as the head and neck, breast, abdomen, extremities, and the gastrointestinal, parts of the vascular, and endocrine systems amoung others. Aside from hernia repair and trauma, the General Surgeon’s domain includes congenital, infectious, metabolic and neoplastic problems. A general surgeon is also responsible for referrals to other surgical subspecialties.
General Surgery Training:
Before performing independent medical evaluations, a general surgeon should meet the following requirements: Credentialing should reveal training of 5 years. After this, Board Certification and a vigorous ongoing private practice are necessary in a credible IME physician. As with any specialty considered for an independent medical exam, a general, hernia or vascular surgeon should be licensed and in good standing as well.
General Surgery subspecialty certifications:
Certification in one of the following subspecialties requires additional training and examination.
- Pediatric Surgery: A surgeon with expertise in managing surgical conditions in infants, children, and adolescents.
- Hand Surgery: A surgeon who deals with the diagnosis and treatment of surgical conditions of the hand and upper extremities.
- Surgical Critical Care: A surgeon with expertise in the management of the critically ill, including postoperative patients, trauma victims, and those with multiple organ dysfunction.
- Vascular Surgery: The subspecialty consisting of those surgeons with expertise in the management of surgical disorders of the blood vessels, except the intercranial vessels or the heart. See Thoracic Surgery
Please note: There is no specific ABMS subspecialty certification for hernia surgeons; however, many physicians who perform hernia repairs specialize in this area alone.
